NOTEWORTHY INCIDENTS.
An unfortunate lady jumped overboard and drowned, having just given birth to a child in front of the clerk's office on the main deck.
S. H. Davis, the Detroit fish-dealer was picked up by the life boat in a n insensible condition, and at one time was thought would die, but is recovering all right now.
Clerk McIntosh saved the lives of Mrs. W. O. Lumsden and child of Detroit.
Steward Thorne was instrumental in saving many persons. He had both hands badly burned while thus trying to help others.
C. S. Brown of Detroit saved a lady and child.
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. H. Doolittle of Port Huron, who were in the water together 45 minutes say they would not part with the life preservers which saved them for $500. They took the same home with them as a memorial of the event.
A Mrs. C. H. Thompson clung to a paddle of the wheel with her two children for a long time, and was finally picked up all right.
Some man fiend snatched the life-preserver from Mrs. Thompson and buckled it to himself.
Capt. Comer and the engineer were the last men to leave the burning ship.
A brother and sister, quite young, floated together in the water for about 40 minutes, on their "Saratoga trunk," and were finally picked up all right.
A young lady fell between the tug Vulcan and the burning steamer just as they came together, striking on the guards, without injury. Had her fall been a second sooner she would have been crushed between the two boats.
Steward Thorne gave a state room to a very aged lady, telling her it was such a number. She said she would tie a red string on the door knob, so that she could find the room again when she came back, should she choose to leave the same occasionally, as her sight was poor and she could not read the number. The steward says he never saw her after that and thinks she perished in her room.
