Response to an attack on Eugene Motley, LSS keeper, made by the Alpena Labor Journal.
CAPTAIN E. P. MOTLEY.
As if to add insult to injury, the Alpena Labor Journal of last issue proceeds to make more complete the dastardly article recently published in that journal, through the dictatorship of the unmanly and unhappy Holmes and Gereau, whose intent is to affect and destroy the character and official standing of Eugene P. Motley, the very efficient and worthy captain of the Sturgeon Point life saving service. No man has ever had charge of the Point station that was as well liked by all people, or that has attended to his official duties more vigilantly, systematically and successfully than this same Eugene Motley. He has preserved and kept everything about the station in good shape, and the men under him, with the exception of the two jealous and gored individuals at Alpena, who doubtless covet both his high moral and official standing, have regarded him with admiration. The utmost courtesy has always been shown all visitors at the station by the Capt. and also the crew. When the editor of the Labor Journal imputes to Capt. Eugene P. Motley incapability, lack of courtesy, morality, or inattention to official duties, he does not know what he is talking about. Let him come down here and investigate for himself before he becomes an abettor in the villainous attempt to ruin an honest man and trustworthy official--a gentleman in every sense of the tem. He will find this county will produce scores of its best citizens, from all parties, to testify to the good name of Capt. Motley, who believe the sworn charges of Holmes and Gereau are malicious and wholly untruthful.
