Death of Margaret Mary [McKay] McDonald
OLD RESIDENT GONE.
--------
Mrs. Mary McDonald of Caledonia, Passed Away at Ashland, Wis.
--------
Mrs. Mary McDonald, one of the oldest and most esteemed residents of Caledonia township, passed away Thursday, Sept. 19, at the home of her son Archie, in Ashland, Wis. She was on her way from Spruce to Hoquiam, Wash., to visit a son, when she contracted a severe cold which developed into pneumonia, and terminated in her death after an illness of only six days.
The deceased was born near Teasewater, Ont., about 67 years ago. She came with her husband to Alcona county in 1881 and settled in Caledonia. The house of McDonald soon became known to every hunter, land looker or other person who had cause to penetrate the wilds in those early days, as a place where rest and refreshment were assured. No hungry man was ever turned away from her door; if he had money, all right--if not he was fed and if sick nursed back to health and sent on his way rejoicing. It is probable that thousands of people have received hospitality at her hands during her long residence in that part of the county. Mr. McDonald died fifteen years ago, leaving his widow with a large family of children, which she successfully reared, and who have become men and women of worth.
Deceased was the mother of 13 children, 9 of whom are living, viz: Alex of Hoquiam, Wash., Mrs. R. Little and Roderic of Duluth, Minn., Archie and Hugh of Ashland, Wis.; Mrs. C. Alstrum, Mrs. Otto Wilson, Donald and Tena of Caledonia.
The remains were brought to Spruce Sunday, and the funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Presbyterian church, Rev. C. M. Boyce officiating.
