Our community was saddened Tuesday morning to learn that J. L. Waters had passed away at his home here at 6:40 a.m. He had been ill for several years.
Jefferson L. Waters was born at Spring Lake, Michigan, near Grand Rapids, July 11, 1860. He came to Alcona County when a young lad and the greater part of his life was spent here. His marriage to Jessie Conklin of Harrisville, took place, on Friday, October 18th in Flint. The young couple lived at Greenbush for several years and in Louisiana for two years. They built their present home on State Street in 1901, and upon its completion in November of that year, moved here from Greenbush.
Mr. Waters entered the employ of the local Telephone Company in 1909. His retirement as an employee of the Tri-County Telephone Co. took place May 18, 1938, having held this position for 29 years. He was elected on the first City Council in 1905, and served as Alderman for the second ward in the city of Harrisville for over 30 consecutive years.
Surviving him are his widow, and one son William Waters, of Harrietta, Michigan. A daughter, Arlie, died in 1934.
Funeral services were held this Thursday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the home. Rev. C. S. Brown will officiate. Burial in the Springport Cemetery.
Services will be under the auspices of Alcona Lodge No. 292 F. & A. M. Pallbearers will be Wm. R. Barber, Lee Ross, Alex Ferguson, Arthur McIntyre, George Wilson, and Casper Blumer.
